Une comparaison honnête des deux légendaires hôtels cinq étoiles de Marrakech — Royal Mansour et La Mamounia — en termes de chambres, restauration, spa, service et emplacement.
The Two Titans of Marrakech Luxury
For decades, La Mamounia defined luxury in Morocco. When His Majesty King Mohammed VI commissioned the Royal Mansour and opened it in 2010, it created a rival of extraordinary ambition — arguably the most remarkable hotel ever built. Today, the question "Mansour or Mamounia?" is one every returning luxury traveller to Marrakech must answer.
Royal Mansour: The King's Hotel
Built over six years at a cost widely reported to exceed USD 500 million, the Royal Mansour is not so much a hotel as a medina within a medina. 53 standalone riads, each with three floors, a private plunge pool, a butler and a kitchen. Craftsmen from across Morocco — 1,500 master artisans — produced every zellige tile, every carved cedar screen, every hand-embroidered ceiling by hand.
The rooms: Every guest stays in their own riad. The smallest is 520 m². There is no lobby check-in — you are escorted directly to your private home.
Dining: Three restaurants. La Grande Table Marocaine — the most formal Moroccan restaurant in the country. La Table — French gastronomy by Yannick Alléno. Jardin — open-air under fragrant orange trees.
Spa: 2,500 m² of underground spa on three levels. The hammam is widely regarded as the finest in Morocco.
The point of difference: Total privacy. No corridors, no other guests visible. A staff-to-guest ratio reportedly exceeding 6:1. The underground passage system means staff move invisibly — you only see them when you want to.
La Mamounia: The Grand Dame
La Mamounia has been the address of kings, presidents, film stars and artists since 1923. Winston Churchill painted in its gardens. Alfred Hitchcock filmed here. It occupies 8 hectares of walled gardens — the finest in Marrakech — within walking distance of the Djemaa el-Fna.
The rooms: 209 rooms and suites, three riads, decorated with a masterful blend of Moroccan craftsmanship and Art Deco heritage (the 2009 Jacques Garcia redesign is considered one of the finest hotel refurbishments of the 21st century).
Dining: L'Italien (the best Italian restaurant in Morocco), Le Français, Le Marocain, and three bars including the legendary Churchill Bar.
Spa: 2,700 m² spa with a stunning mosaic pool. One of Africa's great hotel spa experiences.
The point of difference: History, energy, location. The gardens at dusk — bougainvillea, orange blossom, 300-year-old olive trees. The buzzing Churchill Bar at midnight. The sense that you are at the centre of Marrakech, not apart from it.
Our Recommendation
For absolute privacy and the singular hotel experience: Royal Mansour.
For heritage, gardens and Marrakech's beating heart: La Mamounia.
Both require advance booking — we maintain relationships with both properties and can secure availability and upgrades that are not accessible through standard channels.
