The Hammam: Heart of Moroccan Wellness
The hammam — the Moroccan steam bath — is one of the world's great wellness traditions, predating modern spa culture by more than a thousand years. It is simultaneously a bathing ritual, a social institution and a meditative practice. In Marrakech, the finest hammam experiences have been refined over generations.
The Traditional Hammam Ritual
A complete traditional hammam unfolds in four stages:
1. The Warm Room (Beit al-Wusta): You acclimatise to moderate heat. Pores begin to open.
2. The Hot Room (Beit al-Harara): Steam rises to 40–50°C. A kessala (hammam attendant) applies a Moroccan black soap (beldi) made from crushed olive pulp and eucalyptus. The soap is left for 5–10 minutes.
3. The Kessa Scrub: With a kessa mitt (coarse loofah glove), the attendant performs a full-body exfoliation. Dead skin rolls off in visible sheets — testament to the thoroughness of the process.
4. Argan Oil Massage: Cold-pressed argan oil from the Souss region — known as "liquid gold" — is worked into the skin with a 30-minute massage. The result is skin of extraordinary softness.
Closing ritual: Mint tea served warm, rosewater spritzed over the face.
Private Hammam Options We Arrange
Palace Hammams: La Mamounia Spa, Royal Mansour Spa — full private hire for couples or small groups, with butler service throughout.
Historic Medina Hammams: We arrange private-hour access at a 19th-century neighbourhood hammam in Bab Doukkala — an authentic experience in a space unchanged for a century, with no other guests.
In-Riad Hammam: Many of our partner riads have a private hammam in the basement. Your personal spa with a professional kessala — entirely at your own pace.
Practical Notes
