Fes el-Bali — the old medina of Fes — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most complex urban environments on earth. Founded in 789 AD, it contains 9,000 streets, 180 mosques, the world's oldest university (Al-Qarawiyyin, 859 AD), and craft traditions — leatherwork, ceramic tilework, brasswork, weaving — unchanged for a thousand years. It is also deeply confusing without an expert.
